Headache Nasal Congestion
by AFSARULLA KHAN
I HAVE HAD A HEADACHE PROBLEM FROM MORE THAN 3 YEARS AND I HAVE NASAL BLOCKING PROBLEM FOR 6 MONTHS.
I HAVE DONE NASAL SURGERY LIKE (SEPTUM PLASTIC)IN MANIPAL HOSPITAL.AFTER THE SURGERY THERE IS NO PROBLEM BREATHING ,THE NASAL ARE COMPLETELY CLEAR,BUT THERE IS STILL HEADACHE PROBLEM, AND LIGHTLY NASAL BLOCKING AT NIGHT WHILE SLEEPING ONLY.
THEN I HAVE CONSULTED WITH A NEUROLOGIST IN MANIPAL HOSPITAL DR.NITIN.
HE TOLD ME TO TAKE (TRYPTOMER 10 MG TABLETS AT NIGHT FOR 3 MONTHS)
THE COURSE (OF MEDICATION) IS OVER,BUT I STILL FEEL A HEADACHE,LIKE VOMITING,I FEEL LIKE COLD HEADACHE. I GET DEEP SLEEP I CAN'T WAKE UP IN THE EARLY MORNING.
IF POSSIBLE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT KIND OF HEADACHE IS THIS?
IF THERE IS ANY MEDICINE IS THERE TO CURE IT?
Dear Mr. Khan,
The medication that your doctor placed you on is one we use here in the United States for many different types of headaches. Tryptomer is another name for Elavil, generic name amitryptiline. It is a good medication for post surgical headache, sleep problems and for migraines.
Headaches that have vomiting can be either migraines or perhaps tension headaches.
Here is a good article about sinus and nasal stuffiness versus migraine.
Medscape article on migraine.
I would go back to see your neurologist and tell him what you told me. A short course of low dose steroid (1-2 weeks) may help. If it is migraine, sumatriptan is available in India and is the generic for Imitrex used here in the US. It works well for migraine.
Although there is no cure for migraine (if that is what you have) there is management. In other words, you have good medication that you take at the onset of a headache and it gets rid of the headache completely. Hopefully your neurologist can get you down to one headache a month that is a small one.
