Post Op Pain /Headache
by: Bob Jackson

Posterior radiculopathy surgery and bone fusion at C3-4 and c6-7 improved some symptoms for about 6 months. Since then 4/2016, most old digital symptoms have returned and much new nerve pain in upper body. Dropped left foot, very weak ankle and knee. In the past 2 months (10 mo. post surgery) very sore neck and headaches full time. I can feel swelling behind right ear and rt side of neck. This is surgery #8, but first cervical. 7 lumbar since 1969!
I I assume headache is cervicogenic in nature. Since I'm on 50 mgh fentanyl and percocet 10 mg 4X daily, the headache seems strange. I live with an ice pack which helps greatly.
I live in an area that has 1 neurologist and 1 neural surgeon.

HEADACHES AFTER CERVICAL FUSION
by: Anonymous

HEY,

I HAVE HAD CERVICAL NECK FUSION AT C5-C6, C6-C7.
I STILL HAVE THE HEADACHES AFTER THE FUSION, EVEN WORSE. MY DOCTORS HAVE ME TAKING ELAVIL 50 MG AT NIGHT TO PREVENT THE HEADACHES, HYDROCO AP/AP IF THEY GET TO BAD. I HAVE SEVERE HEADACHES STARTING AT THE BASE OF MY HEAD AND RADIATING TO MY EYELIDS! LAYING FLAT ON THE FLOOR IS THE ONLY RELIEF. I CAN'T LIVE MY LIFE ON THE FLOOR....
ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Answer:

Yes..try to increase the Elavil slowly to 75 mg. You might be a bid under dosed. C2/C3 nerve blocks may also help..a pain management doc could do these.

C1/C2 fusion
by: Anonymous

I had a C1/C2 fusion after trying other things, shots, etc and knew I would not be able to live with the pain at the base of my neck and up into jaw area etc. Had a very bad car accident about 20 years before all this pain started. After the surgery and some pt, watch out and don't do too much like I did, had pain in lower Cs, which had probably been slightly damaged from accident and fusions usually end up affecting other portions of neck. I still have trouble with neck and wish I knew what kind of pillow would be good, because the "normal neck" pillows do not work. That said, I get an ablation on a yearly basis and it does really, really help. I was nervous about it at first, but finally said okay. Now do it yearly and it calms most of the pain down substantially for about 8 months. I am not getting injected with doses of cortisone which I do know has some serious side affects. So I would look into to this and see if you could have it done. Pain management specialists do this.

Answer:

Did you read my review on the pillow I use personally? It was developed by a Chiropractor, the Chiroflow Pillow.

Cervical Headaches
by: Anonymous

Two years after my cervical fusion at 5,6&7 i am still suffering from severe headaches. They occur daily and any relief i get only lasts a few hrs. I've had every injection possible including botox ,radio frequency ablasion, accupuncture, tens, ice, heat, physical therapy, massage therapy, cervical traction and i cant count the number of different meds. We are interviewing for an ocipital stimulator soon but nothing has been able to last. My headache is constant, thumping with my heartbeat and progress to full blown migraine almost every day if it is'nt there upon getting up in the morning. My neck and traps are always full of knots and my head is tender to the touch.I'm missing my life ,my kids grow up and so much more. I currentley take lyrica, amitryptilyn & depakote daily; then rotate between trexamet and cambia when the headaches start to get worse. Any ideas out there would be appreciated ..
