Headache-Adviser Newsletter, Issue #014-Research Update
February 12, 2009

You are receiving this email because you opted in for the newsletter.

I have been quite busy this year in our practice at The Dent Headache Center. Together with two other members of our team, we are starting more headache research AND are participating in research initiated by other headache centers.

One trial that is currently open and available through us, the Michigan Head and Pain Institute and Jefferson Headache center is the Chronic Migraine Treatment Trial (CMTT). If you have more than 15 headache days per month, are not on a beta-blocker and generally healthy you may qualify. You can be on Topamax, but not over 100mg per day. If interested and in our area of Buffalo, NY please visit our site for more information.

I am also submitting research on adolescent migraine and the use of IV magnesium in migraine to the Migraine Research Foundation (keep your fingers crossed!). We are very interested in pediatric and adolescent research and recently hired a pediatric neurologist.

Research in the last year has also indicated that magnesium might be effective in menstrual migraine and in barometric pressure headache. Most clinics are now recommending magnesium oxide 600-800mg per day as a preventative.

One site to check out is If you haven't been there, you can search for research trials in the US that might be in your area.

Also..if you are not aware of it yet the following medications for migraine are now generic: Imitrex, Depakote ER, and Keppra. Topamax was expected to be generic by now, but according to pharmacists is not available yet.

Good luck with your headaches as we approach spring. I will try to keep up with the monthly newsletter but it might be closer to 6 weeks on average...I have started another website on alternative use of herbs at which is keeping me off the streets at the present time. (Think I have enough to do??)

Here's To Headache Free Days

Take care..
