Zonegran and Headaches

Zonegran is a drug used to treat seizures but can also have a beneficial effect on headaches. Like other drugs used in recurring headaches, Zonegran is used in low doses to decrease headaches. I have found that it is not as effective as Topamax or Depakote but still might work if the other two have failed.

Zonegran is most effective in treating chronic migraines, as such it has little effect on cluster headache or post-traumatic headaches.

It is also not suitable for chronic daily headaches which are caused by analgesic rebound or underlying psychiatric causes.

SIDE EFFECTS: dizziness, vertigo, nausea.

You should not take this medication if you are pregnant or have a history of kidney stones or renal disease.

Before you consider what may be the best headache medication for you, read more about the different types of headaches.
