Bad Headache

by Nikki
(Cypress)

For about a week now a patient has had a very bad severe headache and went to the doctor. The doctor took blood work and it all came out normal and sent the patient home.

She now still cant get rid of the headache and some times hurts so bad that it makes her cry. She was told by the doctor that she has been prescribed too too many medications and that it could be the reason why. The patient is 19 and taking 7 different medications a day. What could this be or should the patient try and get a ct scan?

Nikki

Answer:

Hi Nikki,

I am not sure if the 'patient' is you or a friend or relative but whoever it is, a worsening headache profile is cause to get either a CT or MRI of the brain. In headaches, an MRI is preferable.

Too many medications, especially too many anti-inflammatories or pain killers like Lortabs can definitely make headaches worse.

This is called analgesic rebound headaches.

If your friend is this sick and still in bed, she needs to go to the ER for treatment to break the cycle of pain. Follow up should be with a neurologist, preferably one who specializes in headaches.

Good luck!

Bad Headaches

I have been having bad headaches and migraines since I was about 19. (I am 30 now) I am currently being treated with medication. I am on inderal and I take imitrex. I have tried so many different medications and have had no relief. I am at my wits end.

My doctor told me that I should try injections. I have tried that and infusions and nothing works. I get relief for a day or two and that is it. I just want to drive my car into a tree or something. At least then the pain would stop. I don't know what to do anymore or what will help.

Answer:

Hi,

You don't give your location so I can't recommend a clinic. I would recommend that you visit the MAGNUM migraine website as they have a map of the US with headache centers located on it.

I am going to assume your doctor meant Botox for migraine headache which has shown great promise. We use it in our clinic and have about a 60%-75% response rate which is pretty good. You would need 2 rounds of injections before you can say whether or not it is working to reduce headaches.

Look honestly at your lifestyle. People in chronic pain must keep a rigid lifestyle to calm the nervous system down. Have you tried biofeedback or acupuncture? You never know what might help but the key is to do it all at the same time. Lifestyle, alternative therapies and medications. Are you on the migraine vitamin therapy? B2, feverfew and magnesium do help but you must be on them at least 90 days. After that we recommend increasing the magnesium to 800mg per day.

If you are taking any over the counter medications for headache or opiods (fiorcet, butabital, lortab) this should stop as over time they actually increase a headache profile.

Good luck!

Bad headaches all the time

by Krista
(Pa)

Hi, I am a 21 year old female who has been getting headaches every day now for the past couple months or so. I'm very clumsy, and I've banged my head hard numerous times in the past month or so, and I don't know if that has anything to do with the headaches.

They are mostly in my eyes and I can't get rid of them with aspirin. Lights make the pain worse, and I wear glasses for far away, the glasses sometimes make the pain worse as well. I made an appointment with my doctor today for next week, but can you give me any ideas on what's causing this? Thanks!

Krista

Answer:

Hi Krista,

Usually when I hear a history like this one, there is some previous head injuries involved but not small ones. Most people tell me that they have had a few motor vehicle accidents, whiplash injuries or sports injuries. THEN they bump their head on the kitchen cabinets and the headaches start.

You are describing the classic migraine headache symptoms. What most people don't realize is that migraine does not always occur on one side of the head. 40% of migraine occurs in the center of the face just around the eyes and nose.

You definitely should see the doctor, because if it is migraine and has gone on this long then it is status migrainosus. Aspirin at this point would have little effect and may affect your stomach. Your doctor may recommend neuroimaging and an MRI would be best as it gets better images of the brain than a CT.

The clumsiness is consistent with the mild vertigo that can occur during migraine. When in status migrainosus, this symptom tends to come and go depending on the severity of the headache.

Best of luck!

Worst headaches in the past couple of days

by austin
(texas)

I'm 14, I've just been having awful headaches to where I can barely think. It started after I went on a couple of roller coasters, and now I'm scared I did something. I haven't tried tests or anything. I haven't told my parents.

Answer:

Hi,

If you have never had headaches before and this happened after going on a ride, you need to tell your parents. A new onset of headache after something like this needs to be evaluated by your pediatrician. Don't be afraid! You didn't do anything wrong, but it is best to talk to an adult and get it sorted out.

Good luck
